Welcome to First Shots! A Handgun Introduction.
At Carolina Sporting Arms, our guides know the biggest hurdle is simply getting started. That’s why our First Shots class makes it easy and enjoyable.
This 2.5-hour classroom + range session (with live fire) provides a welcoming introduction to handgun shooting and builds a strong safety foundation. Perfect for complete beginners, it helps you become confident, prepared, and excited about this empowering skill — for self-protection, sport, or both.

We’ve guided hundreds of first-timers from zero experience to comfortable, capable shooters. Our certified instructors create a safe, supportive environment so you can thrive.
This course requires 50 rounds and is a perfect opportunity to lay a solid foundation and prepare you for our Shooting Fundamentals series of classes.
During a First Shots class, you’ll gain hands-on exposure to:
- Safe gun handling, safety rules, and guidelines
- The different handgun types and why you would prefer one over the other
- Proper handgun grip, stance, sight picture, sight alignment, and other fundamentals
- Popular terms used in shooting sports and basic functions of a handgun
- How to safely load and unload a handgun
- Understanding of the local requirements for purchasing and owning a firearm
- Introduction to shooting sports opportunities for all levels of interest
The program provides you with a comprehensive introduction to shooting a handgun by certified instructors that includes:
- Firearm safety
- Local ownership requirements
- Shooting fundamentals
- Hands-on instruction
- How and where to continue training with your next class
Prerequisite
- Complete and Sign the Liability Waiver Agreement
- Watch the CSA safety video before being permitted to shoot
- Photo ID is required to shoot on the range.
*If you have not fired a firearm before, we recommend you take one of our introductory classes: Give It A Shot, or the First Steps and First Shots Classes before joining an Action Shooting Match Event.

- Unloaded firearm and magazine (if you have them)
- If you don’t have a firearm, one will be provided to you
- 50+ rounds of ammo, can be purchased in the store
- Eye protection; hard shell or custom molded ear protection
